The present speed limit of 8 knots was generally found to be the worst speed to operate at for recreational vessels. Measured boat wake energies were up to 20 times the predicted extreme wind wave energy. Higher speeds (planning) still produce large wave energy. At 5 knots, all boats produced a tiny wake. Wind waves are much larger than at Ashfield Parade. Smaller recreational boats produced less wave energy than the extreme wind waves. The Star Flyte Express and large recreational vessel produced comparable wave energy, each much larger than the extreme wind wave energy. Shallow-water effects are important for the larger vessels. At Chidley Point and Quarry Point, large recreational vessels produced the largest wake during normal traffic. Chidley Point had the largest total wave energy, followed by Quarry Point and Goodwood Parade.
