Advances in Vacuum Technology provide SMART Grid 'To the End'. The growth of the Electricity Distribution Network's 'Internet of Things'
Devices to enhance medium voltage electricity distribution networks performance are evolving rapidly. The adaptation of legacy technologies, perhaps previously only applied in transmission schemes, and the development of intelligent embedded devices such as fast acting vacuum circuit breakers, load sensing / fault passage devices, load flow control and compensation devices, and other wirelessly connected devices combine to achieve a greater value and service for the network, and create the Distribution Networks "Internet of Things" An understanding of the applications of new technologies is required by design engineers, as devices cross conventional standards, and allow the applications of devices to achieve a greater value and service. Adaptations of standard operating procedures may be considered to enable new technologies, and network standards and testing / approval regimes may need revisions, and collaborations with product developers. The author proposes that the investment in these standards and operating procedures will ultimately produce a much more elegant, robust and interconnected network with considerably lower up-front investment needs and associated running costs. Embrace the future!
