Grains feed the world as the world's most important renewable commodity. In many countries more than 75% of the total food intake comes from grains. Reliable grain quality analyses form the basis for the development of technologies aimed at pest and disease control, the reduction of production costs and of dependence on agrochemicals, increasing water efficiency and compliance with biosecurity for market access for locally produced grain and oilseeds. To address food security and food safety issues through high quality grain products in South Africa remains a challenge and the high standards can only be maintained through effective quality control measures on all levels, based on reliable research and monitoring data. The aim of this paper is to illustrate the value of reliable quality data on grain generated over several seasons and production regions to assist with sustainable grain production and quality for specific end-uses.
