Requests to calibrate refractometers used in industry as well as the measurement of refractive index are occasionally received by NMISA. The laboratory is not equipped to perform these calibrations and these facilities do not exist on a national level. The aim of the project undertaken is to develop a measurement method to determine the refractive index of prisms and liquids and to disseminate the scale to the user community through a calibration service. The purpose of this project is to determine the best measurement method of refractive index and to upgrade the facility used for these measurements. Since the gloss of an object is determined by the refractive index of that object, the feasibility of using the spectrometer for gloss measurements will be determined after completion of this project.
