Dissolution Behavior of Pt Alloy Catalysts in Sulfuric Acid Solution

The dissolution behavior of platinum alloy has been investigated for application in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell catalyst. Pt alloys (Pt-Co, Pt-Ni, Pt-Fe) were prepared by arc melting. The electrochemical behavior was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in 0.5M H_2SO_4 at 298K. The test solutions were analyzed by using ICP to determine the amount of dissolved ions. The results of CV of Pt-Co, Pt-Ni and Pt-Fe alloy electrodes indicated that the current density of Pt-Co, Pt-Ni was much smaller than that of Pt-Fe alloy and close to that of Pt electrode. The ICP results revealed that amount of dissolution for Pt-Co and Pt-Ni alloys were much lower than that for Pt-Fe alloy.
