With cells increasing in size and current, lining materials and structure assume an increasingly important role in improving the life of aluminum reduction cells. Traditionally, the bottom lining is designed to provide more resistance to heat transfer while the side lining promotes ledge formation. Lining materials are also required to provide protection from erosion and penetration by the molten bath while simultaneously exhibiting thermal stability. They must also absorb cathode dilation and alleviate tension by improving thermal distribution inside the cathode and lining. Consistent with these needs, a lining structure and material options are presented for reduction cells that exhibit long life and high performance.
