Issues in Developing a Greenhouse Gas Offsets Protocol for Tidal Wetland Restoration Projects

Facilities that are required to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, or those that voluntarily want to do so, are increasingly interested in investing in GHG offset projects as a means to meet their GHG commitments. With approximately 25,000 square kilometers of tidal wetlands~1 within the conterminous United States, wetland creation, restoration, and enhancement projects show potential as net sinks of GHGs. However, numerous data and GHG accounting issues exist, making it difficult to develop an accounting protocol for crediting offsets projects in this sector~2
