The opencast coal mining is accompanied by accumulation of vast amounts of carbon-containing wastes oxidized under in-place conditions. Besides, the coal production facilities (mines, coal-cleaning plants, by-product coke plants, etc.) can have some amounts of coal weathered in storage. Accumulation of substandard coal fuels exerts a detrimental effect on the environment. Thus, methods should be found to utilize such coal wastes as secondary resources. A possible way to use naturally oxidized coal is the production of highly efficient carbon sorbents.
