The chemistry of carbon blacks (CBs) is of large interest as these materials are used in a wide range of applications. Despite the interest of new nano-carbon materials (nanotubes, graphene, etc.) with exceptional attributes, the CBs’ characteristics together with their low prices make them attractive materials for new innovative applications as, for example, support materials for the development of new biosensors. Branched poly-ethylene(imine)s possess properties (as polybasic, polychelatogen and polyelectrolyte substances) that make them attractive for potential biological and technological applications. Due to these attractive potentialities we have studied the functionalization of a CB with a hyper-branched poly- ethyleneimine (HBPEI).The strategy has been to functionalize the CB with oxygen-containing groups which act as intermediate for the further reaction with some of the amine groups of HBPEI. Thus, it has been studied the influence of three oxidation treatments on the degree and nature of functionalization with oxygen-containing groups and then the influence of this groups on the reaction with HBPEI to render CB/HBPEI hybrids.
