Boron/carbon (B/C) and boron/carbon/nitrogen (B/C/N) materials based on the graphite network are kinds of heteroatom-substituted carbon alloys and are expected to be used as new host materials and new semiconductors . We previously reported that Na can be electrochemically intercalated and de-intercalated into and out of a material with a composition BC2N, while Na cannot be easily intercalated into graphite but be inserted to non-crystalline carbon. We consider that boron in B/C/N materials may have an important role in the intercalation of these metals. In the present study, we report preparation and characterization of B/C materials as the anodes of Li and Na ion batteries. The roles of boron in B/C materials have also been considered.
