As a carbon electrode especially for fuel cell, there are several necessary properties, among which large surface area and high resistance to electrochemical oxidation are key factors affecting the catalyst dispersion in an electrode and its cycle life, respectively. In general, the two factors are, however, incompatible with each other: larger surface area always gives rise to higher reactivity toward oxidation. In the present study, we try to prepare carbon materials having both large surface area and high oxidation resistance and demonstrate that the seemingly incompatible needs can be reconciled with each other.
