Using the most sensitive techniques, many recent studies have unequivocally confirmed the existence of naturally-occurring HLA antibodies (Abies). However, many investigators outside the HLA community still remain skeptical of natural antibodies. The purposes of this report are: to present our findings of natural HLA Class I antibodies from antibody (Ab) testing of 2456 random plateletpheresis donors and to review the naturally occurring antibodies of RBC systems. A total of 2472 plateletpheresis donors from 5 American Red Cross regions enrolled in the study. Each study subject was asked to complete a questionnaire to identify risk factors for Ab formation (e.g., pregnancy, transfusion or transplantation [Tx]) and last year of exposure. One red-top serum sample was collected from each donor.
