Oronasal Communication: Congenital and acquired palatal defects result in chronic rhinitis. The differential diagnosis is based on other diseases that might cause rhinitis including fungal organisms, foreign body, and neoplasia. Oral examination proves diagnostic based on visual evidence of an oronasal communication or periodontal probing into the nasal cavity with or without epistaxis. Acute oronasal fistula following tooth extraction is diagnosed by direct visualization of the nasal cavity or observing epistaxis. This usually occurs following canine tooth extraction or extraction of teeth with severe periodontal disease leading to direct communication with the nasal cavity.
