Investigation of hydrodynamic characteristics in manoeuvres of a flat type underwater vehicle, which had a ratio of breadth to height as 2:1, is presented in this paper. Captive model tests in wind tunnel and rotating arm basin were carried out to measure the hydrodynamic forces, and the experimental results have shown that the hydrodynamic characteristics of the fiat type underwater vehicle are similar to those of conventional submersibles with slender and cylindrical bodies. Meanwhile, the flat body also results in some difference: vertical force coefficient in the vertical plane of motion is large, and cross-coupling and non-linearity of hydrodynamic forces in the spatial motion are quite notable. Based on the analysis of hydrodynamic characteristics, the six Dof motion equations used to describe the maoeuwing motion for the flat type underwater vehicle were developed, and its manoeuvring performance was also predicted and analyzed by numerical method.
