Current burden of otitis media and its causes in asia

Otitis media (OM) causes an important burden in Asia, as many Asian countries were categorized as the high group of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) prevalence, in which avoidable burden of disease must be addressed. Considering the increasing proportion of Asian population among the world population, increasing burden of otitis media in this region is clearly anticipated. Additionally, antibiotics abuse resulted in the high prevalence of bacterial resistance to antibiotics causing secondary economic burden in this region. Given the prevalence of OM and high rates of antibiotic-resistant pneumococci among Asian children, there is a need to develop alternative prevention and intervention strategies to manage it.
