In the last few years, a great deal of work has been carried out in order to clarify the hydrodynamic performance of breakwater for coastal protection, both submerged and emerged. As far as the barrier cross section design is concerned, the main research effort has been aimed at evaluating the wave energy transmission behind the structure: the most widely used parameter is the ratio between transmitted and incoming wave height, commonly indicated as Kt.The main variables to be taken into account, from the designer point of view are: the berm width B, the freeboard and to the toe depth h; given such variables – and of course the wave parameters -there are various well tested methods and formulas to provide a value for Kt.The reverse is not so obviously true – given a Kt , there are many possible choices for B, and h; a correct design procedure should obviously take into account the construction cost; the Authors are therefore proposing a procedure to supply a first estimate of such a cost.
