Studying the Relation between Corrosion and Surface Roughness

Corrosion is part of the natural process of a metal to go back to its original state, in which it is found in the nature. It is been studied that this regression is an expensive process if it is expressed in financial terms. In this paper it is studied the relation of corrosion and surface roughness machining aluminium and steel blocks with controlled parameters. Then, they are exposed in a salt fog chamber before and after being measured with a rugometer. The analysed parameters are the roughness average, the profile of the measures and the mass loss between the initial and the final blocks. Experiments were carried out by generating a surface on the blocks with variable factors and levels for each of them. The design of experiments was defined as full factorial with four variable factors adding up to forty-eight experiments. Small differences are found between "before" and "after" surfaces but cannot be overlooked. Some signals of the surface being corroded have been found. Not much relation can be seen between the surface roughness and the mass loss.
