@@This paper deals with a particle clumping technique which combines the neighboring particle together to mimic a single irregular-shape rock grain. The clumped particle assembly was tested in uniaxial compressive boundary condition. Analysis of stress vs. strain curves and orientations of cracks from model simulations on the clumped particle assembly and the conventional particle assembly indicates that the particle clumping better mimics the deformation, strength, and fracturing characteristics of rocks. However, further investigations and improvements are still required for the clumped particle assembly to have wider uses in practical applications, irrespective of stress path.
