The porous tubular ceramics, as support for Pd membrane, were successfully fabricated by extrusion. The Al_2O_3 and YSZ powders were used as starting materials in this study. The organic additive was essentially mixed with ceramic powder to form the extrudable dough. After sintering, characterization of the density, pore size, porosity and flexural strength were investigated. The sintering behavior was highly influenced by particle packing such that the smaller particle size of YSZ provided highly dense green body and resulted to fast sintering rate. As a result, suitable pore size and porosity of YSZ tube can be obtained at a lower sintering temperature compare to that of Al_2O_3. The preliminary study of Pd membrane fabrication by mean of electroless plating revealed that the porous tubular Al_2O_3 and YSZ have the feasibility to be used as membrane supports.
