The role of innate defence cells in maintaining immune homeostasis is well established. Alterations in innate cell reactivity can be instrumental to the development of pathologies. In this study we have developed in vitro models of innate/inflammatory reactivity of innate defence cells able to predict immunomodulatory and/or immunotoxic properties of exogenous agents. The effects of andrographolide, a compound of the traditional Chinese medicine, and engineered nanoparticles (NP) were assessed. While adrographolide displays a clear type 2 anti-inflammatory profile, NP were unable to alter gene expression and cytokine production.
