The key to restoring three-dimensional scene information accurately of a binocular stereo vision system was stereo matching. Selection of matching element and matching algorithm directly determined the effect of the stereo matching. In order to achieve accurately three-dimensional matching as far as possible, this paper had put forward a stereo matching algorithm which based on chain code vector. First of all, the algorithm extracted the edge information of image by an improved Laplace edge detection operator which could improve the reliability of edge detection. Secondly, the edge information which had extracted could be described by chain code. Thirdly, the algorithm structured the chain code into a vector and made use of similarity principle of mathematics vector to carry on stereo matching. Experimental results showed that the algorithm was simple and fast, and could gain a high precision of matching. So, the algorithm had a high practical value.
