An Overview of Instrumentation for Rock Blasting

Due to the fast and violent nature of rock blasting, instrumentation plays an important role in the progress of blasting technology. This paper provides a review of commonly used instrumentation technologies including measurements of VOD, dynamic pressures, vibrations and fragmentation. With the help of modern video photographic technologies, high speed video has gradually replaced high speed film photography in the past 20 years. To understand the blasting results, pre-blast measurement tools such as bench profiling, hole deviation tools are also important in providing the evidence for engineers to further improve blast designs. To properly use the correct instrumentation for blasting is an important skill for blasting professionals to have.
