Blasting is a process of rapid transformation of explosives into gases at high pressure and temperature. Explosives have proved to be the best energy source for fragmenting and displacing the rock mass with economy, efficiency and safety. Adoption of modern blasting techniques has drastically reduced the overall mining cost. Good blasting leads to ultimate reduction in the cost of mineral production. The ill effects of blasting viz. air blasts, ground vibration, fly rock etc. are also reduced. Cost of secondary drilling and blasting is cut down considerably. Optimum fragmentation, proper throw and suitable muck pile greatly improves the loading, hauling and crushing operations. Thus, good blasting increases production, productivity and profit of a commercial rock engineering venture.
