High performance computing has seen a dramatic change mainly in architectures. For a long time clusters of standard building blocks were considered to be the best solution for every problem. This has changed over the last two or three years. New concepts have come up that are known as "hybrid" or "low power" and the user is faced with new challenges in programming. Besides these software challenges there is an energy problem that has overrun many medium centres already in the last year and will become an even more severe problem in the years ahead. In this chapter we summarize the situation and elaborate on ways to overcome the road blocks.
