Multiplex PCR vs. Blood Culture: Towards a New Gold Standard in Sepsis Diagnostics

Focus of the study was to determine whether multiplex PCR is suitable, fast, and sensitive enough to detect bacterial and fungal sepsis causative pathogens and resistances in a competitive manner with respect to the gold standard of sepsis diagnostics, e. g. blood culture. Multiplex PCR was used to identify the definite causative agents in whole blood and to supply valuable information with respect to the initiation of an antimicrobial therapy.
