Of all cancers occurring in women in developed countries, breast cancer alone accounts for about 32%. This is obviously an important world-wide public health concern. More than 90% of all human breast cancer cases are sporadic or non-familial, with an equally high percentage of these cases being ductal carcinomas. Estrogens have a profound role in the causation and progression of human sporadic breast cancer. In premenopausal woman, all of the well-established risk factors clearly implicate estrogens in the etiology of sporadic ductal breast cancer.
