Since 2009, most of the new diesel-powered passenger car and light-weight commercial vehicles have to use Diesel Particulate Filter's (DPF) to remove soot particles from the exhaust gas. A way to raise the exhaust gas temperature required to initialise the regeneration is by injecting vaporised fuel into the exhaust gas via a dosing device, e.g. fuel vaporiser, but this approach demands a good mixing of the fuel and the exhaust gas. This study describes how 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to assess the fuel distribution across the oxidation catalyst. A simplified chemical reaction model will be used to model the diesel oxidation process. The new approach has been verified by correlating the predicted gas temperature with measurements.
