HCCI suffers from controllability in a conventional IC engine. The volume change with respect to crank angle in a conventional IC engine approximates a sine-wave. This causes the pressure to be very high over an extended duration. The engine simulated in this work reaches very high compression ratios within the final few crank angles of the stroke. Therefore it was speculated that combustion could be controlled to within a few degrees of TDC without using techniques such as EGR or VVT. The simulations showed that no external technique was needed to control the point of auto-ignition. However, it was found that intake air preheating was still required to achieve spontaneous combustion of the fuel.
