An Investigation in the Use and Performance of Diatomaceous Earth In an EPDM Rubber Gasket for Domestic Laundry Application

The reinforcement of elastomers by finely divided Fillers, like silica, is fundamental to the rubber industry. Very fine particle size precipitated silica is the major reinforcing filler used to develop tensile and tear strength. Additionally, semi-reinforcing fillers such as ground quartz, calcium carbonate, clays, diatomaceous earth, metallic oxides, etc are also used to impart moderate strength in addition to other advantages such as improved processing, performance characteristics and reductions in cost. Due to its chemical inertness, high porosity, high surface area, and morphology, Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is uniquely suited for a wide range of functional mineral additive applications. In the last few years, the primary focus of our R&D efforts has been a continuing product development program directed at expanding the use of DE in multiple applications. The latest result of this intense effort is the introduction of DE as reinforcing filler in gaskets used for laundry applications.
