Identifying Suitable Hindered Amine Based Light Stabilizers Packages for Selected Polyolefin Applications

Many different types of Hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) are commercially available today and these stabilizers are extensively utilized to prevent the degradation of polymers exposed to UV radiation. Typically, a HALS contains the basic chemical structure of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine (>N-H), 1,2,2,6,6- penta methyl-piperidine (>N-Me) or 1-alkoxy-2,2,6,6-tetra- methl-piperidine (>NO-Alkyl). The suitability of the particular type of HALS depends on the application and condition of use because each type has a different characteristic. In this study, advanced N-H type HALS system provided remarkable weathering resistance. Also, N-Me type HALS showed not only light stability but also high thermal stability. Additionally, novel NO-Alkyl type HALS not only offered excellent light stability, but also was found to be particularly suitable for parts exposed to an acidic environment. The molecular weight and compatibility of HALS in question in the substrate are also important from viewpoint of long-term light stability of polyolefin. This paper describes the appropriate usage of the HALS for a number of desired improvements in various end use applications.
