Mesoporous high surface area and high crystallinity MO_2(M = Ti, Ce, Zr,and Hf) and their mixed oxides powders were synthesized by a modifiedsol-gel method using laurylamine hydrochloride, metal alkoxide andacetylacetone. The prepared powders had a crystalline size of about 5-15nm, a specific surface area of 44-80 m~2/g, and a narrow pore sizedistribution with average pore diameter of about 3-6 nm. 1-D nano-structured (nanorods and nanowires) metal oxides were also successfullysynthesized by hydrothermal method. Uniformly sized B phase VO_2nanorods had widths about 40-80 nm and lengths reaching up to 1 μm.V_20_5rodlike structured with the widths about 100-500 nm and lengthof 1-10 μmwere obtained by calcination at 400 °C for 4 h. Tungstenoxides and magnesium oxides nanowires were also synthesized using thesame route of vanadium oxides nanorods by changing only alkoxideprecursors. These synthesis methods provide simple routes to fabricatenanostructured materials under mild conditions.
