An Innovative Ashfill Expansion at the Town of Babylon Landfill Site

A lateral and vertical expansion of an existing ashfill was designed for the Town of Babylon Landfill (TBL) site in New York. The proposed expansion consists of the construction of a new 2-hcctare (5-acre) lateral expansion cell in the area of the existing on-site recharge basin, followed by vertical expansion over an existing ashfill using reinforced soil wall (RSW) systems. This proposed expansion, with the use of innovative surface water management (SWM) and RSW systems, will provide additional ashfill airspace of approximately 612,000 cubic meters (800,000 cubic yards) and extend the active life of the ashfill by approximately nine years. The design and permitting of the RSW and SWM systems for the ashfill expansion at the TBL site are presented in this paper. Global stability analysis and liquefaction potential evaluation performed for the proposed expansion are also briefly discussed in the paper.
