Water is a ubiquitous by-product of the oil extraction process [1] and produced water is an inevitable consequence of hydrocarbon production from conventional sources. The inevitable increase in the value of dwindling petroleum reserves and increasing focus on the potential environmental hazards of discharged oil mean that efficient separation of the water and oil components is an important consideration for producers and regulators alike [2]. Monitoring the quantities of residual hydrocarbon within the produced water phase is therefore of growing importance. Furthermore, there are multiple applications in the oil and gas industry for methods which can effectively discriminate the hydrocarbon and aqueous phases; these can range from produced water re-injection quality control, to safety testing of refined products at distribution points.
