In the Mattagami Lake Dam development project, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is studying the feasibility of developing of a small hydroelectric plant in immediate vicinity of the company's control dam. The preliminary field studies had revealed the existence of fish spawning downstream of the dam in the area where the proposed Powerhouse tailrace is to be located. In the development process, Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) requested a numerical study to assess the impact of the proposed tailrace configurations on fish spawning. OPG has commissioned BPR-Energy (formerly named SCP-BPR) to conduct the numerical modeling study. It was decided to base the study on a 2D hydraulic modeling of a section of the river downstream of the dam in the river spawning area based on a finite-element method.
