Market is demanding for more and more efficient systems especially in renewable energy and UPS fields. The use of three-level neutral-point clamped (NPC) topology in such applications makes it possible to reach improvements in terms of efficiency, performance and cost, as well as an optimization of harmonic distortion and overall equipment size. The STMicroelectronics' latest MOSFET technology introduction provides a new and more efficient approach for this topology. A detailed comparison between such new approach and standard solutions based on an IGBT and MOSFET combination is provided in a 3 kVA three-level neutral-point clamped inverter.
