Nanomaterials enable coating formulators to improve various coating properties. Such properties include antimicrobial properties as well as UV protection or scratch resistance. In order to improve scratch resistance of coatings different mechanisms have been proposed and/or introduced into coating applications. This presentation will focus on the most relevant mechanisms such as surface enrichment of particles, control of elastic and plastic coating properties by surface treatment of particles and increased cross-linking density again using surface treated nanomaterials. Applications will include different coating technologies such as water-based furniture and parquet coatings, 2-pack solvents based coating systems used on wood or metal as well as UV curable coatings for wood, plastic and printing ink applications.
