Modeling Decision Making Process of Human Operators in Manufacturing

Human operators in manufacturing are performing more information processing, decision making and control activities than ever before. The hypothesis is that they perform naturalistic decision making. This research aims at understanding how people use their experience to make decisions in complex environments. An observational study with a think-aloud protocol of an expert performing a milling operation was done. The study revealed that human operators indeed use simple heuristics and their experience to make decisions in any situation, regardless of its complexity, novelty and dynamism. Naturalistic decision making study of manufacturing workers incorporates the interaction between task, person and environmental factors.
