Determining the Aesthesiometric Thresholds at the Low Back Region: A Pilot Study

The purpose of this research study was to collect quantifiable data on the two point discrimination cutaneous threshold (also called aesthesiometric threshold) from seated and prone individuals on the low back region. Results of this study indicated that the mean proportion of the two point responses increased as the distance between the two points of the aesthesiometer increased. Orientation of testing, proximal-distal and lateral-medial, did not have a significant influence on the responses. Due to the binary nature of the responses ( 0 = cannot distinguish two points; 1 = can distinguish two distinct points), logistic regression was performed and models are included. It is anticipated that results of this study may be useful in designing the contours of seat backs and low back rests in the future.
