Preliminary Detection of Grouting Effect on Delaminated Wall Paintings in Tibetan Architecture

The deterioration of delamination is a severely prevailing phenomenon among the murals of ancient Tibetan architectures,whose proportion amounts to over 75% in all.As an effective way to settle the deterioration,the grouting and reinforcing technology was applied in the maintenance project over three key cultural relics launched by government during the Eleventh five-year plan and has proved to be fruitful.It has been an urgent but unsolved bottle-neck problem for the historical and cultural relic preservation field on how to perform a quantitative test to judge the degrees of deterioration of delamination while it is of great problem to extend the grouting and reinforcing technology because it is difficult to perform quantitative test and judgment on the result of the murals with deterioration of delamination after the process.However,the settlement of this issue for a long time relies on the empirical qualitative description,thus lack of scientific backing.This thesis introduces a nondestructive examination technique,the use of ground penetrating radar into the quantitative appraisal about the degrees of deterioration of delamination and the effects of the grouting,obtaining a remarkable success.
