As people are getting individualized and personal electric devices are distributed more and more, the desirable electric capacity for individual is getting larger. One of the solutions is the small fuel cell package including reformer to use commercial hydrocarbon fuel. However, the carbon monoxide generated from fossil fuel reforming is the main problem to use. It poisons the anode catalysts of low temperature fuel cell and is hard to remove to prevent the poisoning. There are many tries to reduce carbon monoxide level in hydrogen rich stream, but the preferential oxidation reaction with precious metal catalyst is commercially used nowadays. The precious catalyst has too low selectivity that is the reason why the reactor is getting bigger and the catalyst is used more and more to remove carbon monoxide economically. Copper oxide catalyst which has higher selectivity is one of the candidates to replace the precious metal. It has well-known mechanism to react with carbon monoxide with using support material especially for oxygen vacancy on the surface of the support. Many scientists are trying to find well-fitted support material with copper oxide containing high rate of oxygen vacancy on the surface. In this study, we assumed that gadolinium doped ceria could be one of the candidate to be a best support material for copper oxide catalyst to remove carbon monoxide and have conducted some experiments to investigate whether it is applicable or not.
