Petroleum is the main fossil fuel produced on the planet, and crude oil and petroleum-derived products are the source of the most widespread environmental pollution. Currently environmental and geochemistry studies rely mainly on GC-MS(/MS) analysis, in which the ionization of analytes in a mass spectrometer ion source takes place in vacuum by electron ionization (EI). However, EI is a highly energetic ionization method that can produce extensive ion fragmentation. In contrast, soft ionization methods efficiently form molecular ions for optimal MS/MS signal-to-noise ratio and and structural information content.
