Hybrid Drug/Device Strategies for the Treatment of AAA Disease

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) disease is a common and potentially lethal condition that affects many older Americans. Aneurysmal degeneration of the infrarenal abdominal aorta is progressive and charac-terized by transmural inflammation, smooth muscle cell apoptosis, lysis of the elastic laminae and mural neoangiogenesis. The natural history of the disease is one of progressive aortic enlargement and ultimate rupture. Rupture is the most serious complication of AAA disease and is rarely survived.. Surgery is the only available option for the treatment of AAAs. The acceptance of endovascular aneurysm exclusion techniques has decreased surgery related morbidity and mortality. Continued AAA growth following endograft Our talk will address current surgical practices in aneurysm repair, and the role of hybrid drug/device strategies in the management of AAA disease..In particular, we will focus on research regarding pharmacologic,inhibition of aneurysm disease including ongoing large scale clinical. trials as Well as our experience in isolating compounds and modes of delivery that are effective at attenuating experimental aneurysm progression. Finally, we will discuss our ongoing collaborative effort with Medtronic to identify candidate compounds for hybrid drug/device interventions.
