We evaluated two speech research paradigms by comparingstandardized sentences to 'free speech' (both produced bystudents without interaction partner). Samples of infant-(IDS), foreigner- (FDS) and adult-directed speech (ADS)were acoustically analyzed for FO and hyperarticulation. Nodifference for hyperarticulation was found between IDS, FDSand ADS, which is in contrast to natural speech andimaginary 'free speech'. Differences in mean FOapproximated natural speech (IDS significantly higher thanADS and FDS), and represented an improvement comparedto imaginary `free speech'. The implications of thesefindings are discussed in the context of experimental speechresearch.
