The Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) system at Georgia Power Plant Hammond suffered a reduction in performance in 2010. Optimal FGD performance is increasingly important because all four generating units on the site will rely on the scrubber for mercury control, acid gas removal and particulate reduction for compliance with the new MACT rule. This paper describes how the performance shortfall was detected and corrected, what was the root cause of the problem, what steps are being taken to avoid a reoccurrence, what on-line monitoring measures are being employed to verify healthy FGD performance and what methods could be used while the FGD system remains in service to correct a similar problem. The methods described include remote monitoring and diagnostics using FGD performance models, infrared thermography surveys, additional instrumentation and mechanical equipment.
