Several studies have been conducted that independently address CO_2 capture processes. However, very few of these studies have considered the total impact of the capture process on existing coal power plants including potential improvements that could optimize the CO_2 capture process. This paper will provide insight into the overall modifications that should be performed before a CO_2 capture process is installed at an existing power plant. Existing air pollution control systems are analyzed to determine enhancements that would be required to provide adequate flue gas quality for a future CO_2 capture process. Evaluations are conducted on the secondary discharge and treatment options that will be required once the CO_2 capture process is installed. The balance of plant impacts are also reviewed with an emphasis on the impact on air quality control systems. The study also investigates natural resource requirements such as additional plot space and increased water consumption.
