Bending fatigue failure in gears is catastrophic and can cause significant damage. To prevent this damage, it is necessary to monitor its initiation and occurrence. This study will evaluate the detection of gear bending failure in helical gears using acoustic emission, vibration, and oil debris analysis. By combining the information from the different sensors it is possible to provide more robust decision making which not only reduces false alarms, but also provides a cost effective solution. The system has been designed for use on a 75mm back to back gear test rig, but can be adapted for use with any similar test rig or transmission system, and allows for each component to be analyzed independently, or combined, as part of an intelligent decision making health monitoring system.
