Automation enables train service regulation to be more responsive to customer demand by optimized provision of train paths and speedier service recovery after perturbations. Automation will also lead to energy saving from better regulated train service and improved train running profile and staff cost saving. This paper describes the drivers for Fully Automatic Operation (FAO) for MTR Corporation and shares our experience from operating Disneyland Resort Line (DRL), our first railway line built to fully automatic operation. DRL is 3.5 km in route length and was commissioned for operation in 2005 to match the opening of the Hong Kong Disneyland theme park. DRL has prepared the Corporation for more extensive network automation.
