Several cities in Switzerland are presently debating how to replace their trolleybuses. This created a debate about advantages and disadvantages of different traction technologies. Some cities favour diesel, some gas and others stick to trolleybuses which are comparatively common in Switzerland. All of them based their choices on similar analyses and evaluation studies. But the outcome was different. Basel favours gas, Winterthur prefers trolleybuses and Schaffhausen - after considering to switch to diesel - eventually intends to keep the trolleybus system as well. This may be confusing. The presentation presents the results of the different evaluation studies and analyses the reasons why the outcomes are so different. The main causes can be found in specific local conditions.
