A car sharing and public transport partnership is a very attractive way to compete with car ownership and promote a more sustainable approach to urban mobility. In Quebec, Canada, the oldest car sharing organization in North America, Communauto, and all the major public transportation companies in the province (those of Quebec City, Montreal, Laval, Gatineau and Sherbrooke) signed a marketing and operational partnership called "DUO auto + bus", to combine these two modes of transportation. The results of the project are very conclusive: more than 19,000 tons of CO_2 emissions are avoided each year by the 15,000 users of the car sharing service in Quebec, and the potential reduction could reach 170,000 tons per year. Thanks to "DUO auto + bus", over 30% of new car sharing users commit to a long-term subscription to public transit, generating in few months a turnover above 1 million $ per year for transport companies and increasing by over 20% the number of transit passes sold to this group of users. The goal of this presentation is to demonstrate how the "DUO auto + bus" partnership was established and promoted, what the short-term results are, and what the longer-term results might be, in an environmental impact reduction and public transit development perspective.
