BATTERY SYSTEMS FOR MARITIME AUV'S

Many different battery technologies are available that can be used as power sources for autonomous underwater vehicles. Suitable power sources will typically operate in a temperature range from 0°C to 40°C, and space constraints are likely to be much more important than weight constraints. Some AUV's require the greatest energy possible to maximize mission life, while for others rechargeability or ease of battery replacement are of key importance. The longer-term issues of battery disposal and environmental effects should also be taken into account in evaluating different battery systems. Here we discuss characteristics of various battery technologies that might be considered for use in different types of autonomous underwater vehicles.
